Clawdbot is Dead, Long Live Moltbot: Why the Sudden Rebrand?

Jan. 29, 2026

If you tried to run npm install -g clawdbot today or visited the project repository, you might have noticed a sudden shift. The familiar "Clawdbot" name is gone, replaced by something new: Moltbot.

No, the project hasn't been hijacked. No, it hasn't been sold. Clawdbot has molted.

The Name Problem

The issue was always obvious—"Clawdbot" sounds almost identical to "Claude Bot". With Anthropic recently releasing Claude Code, the confusion was getting dangerous.

For users, it was hard to tell if Clawdbot was an official Anthropic product (it wasn't). For legal reasons, trademark lawyers don't like it when a third-party tool sounds exactly like a flagship product.

Creator Peter Steinberger decided to rename proactively, which was a smart move. It separates Moltbot from Anthropic's intellectual property, allowing the project to keep growing without worrying about cease-and-desist letters.

Why "Moltbot"?

The new name isn't random. It's a clever nod to the project's mascot, the lobster 🦞.

In biology, "molting" is the process where crustaceans like lobsters shed their old shells to grow. The metaphor fits: the agent is shedding its old "Clawd" identity to become something bigger and more powerful.

It also keeps that chaotic, crustacean energy the community loves.

What This Means for You

Functionally? Nothing changes. Moltbot is still the same powerful, shell-access, browser-controlling AI agent.

You'll need to update your workflow though:

The GitHub repository will likely migrate. The new install command will probably be:

npm i -g moltbot

For config files, check if your ~/.clawdbot directory needs to be renamed to ~/.moltbot. Check the official setup guide for details.

Closing Thoughts

"Clawdbot is dead. Long live Moltbot."

This rebrand is actually a good sign. It means the developers are serious enough to build a distinct brand. It's no longer a side project piggybacking on a name—it's a standalone tool ready for the mainstream.
